School Input and Engagement at New Mills Secondary School, Church Lane, New Mills - Monday 2nd February

Glossop SNT - School Engagement/Inputs

PCSO Buller of the Glossop Youth Engagement Team (YET) attended New Mills School, Church Lane, New Mills. today, Monday 2nd February. 

Firstly the team had been invited to discuss ‘Hate Crime’ and ‘Hate Incidents’ by completing inputs on Hate Crime with each of their year 7 students in a classroom environment.

🔴 Definition of a Hate Crime - A hate crime is when a Criminal Offence is committed which is perceived by the victim or any other person to be motivated by hostility or prejudice on personal characteristics (monitored strands).

🔵 Monitored Strands - * Disability (seen or unsee) * Race/Ethnicity * Religion/Faith/ Belief * Sexual Orientation * Trans Status * Alternative Sub-Cultures (since 2016) * Gender - Misogyny/Misandry (since April 5th 2021) 

We also discussed the below 

▪️Types of Hate Crme

▪️Free speech vs Hate speech

▪️Strands  some case examples - Racial/Transgender/Alrnative sub-culture

▪️Hate Crime in the News & Social Media

▪️Statistics/Prosecutions & Uplifting of sentences

▪️Signposting Agencies - particularly ‘Got your Back’ (victims of crime for anyone under 18)

▪️How to contact the Police

Secondly the team were there to complete a lunch time drop-in session that was sadly missed last week,
